She reached the final page.
The piece ended mid-scene — deliberately, she thought, rather than because he had not known how to finish it. The scene was the forest clearing. The birthday. The food that had been thought about and arranged and was waiting when they arrived. The father and the son on the walk, the particular quality of two people who had been on the other side of something difficult together and were, on this particular day, simply a father and a son in a forest on a birthday.
The piece ended with the boy looking at his father across the clearing and thinking something he did not say.
