“Teacher Ellen, Nina is here too,” one student chirped.
“Uncle Michael brought her, and he’s been busy in the yard all afternoon,” another added.
Ellen went outside and saw Nina playing happily.
Michael had rolled up his sleeves, grafting fruit tree branches.
His white shirt was smeared with dirt.
“Mr. Benitez, Nina,” Ellen called.
Nina ran to her, eager to be picked up.
Michael smiled. “The kids said these trees bear fruit every year, but the fruits are small and sour. I’m grafting new branches so next year the fruits will be better.”
