“No,” the priest said. “Not yet. First, you must go to the altar, the true altar.”
Sarah’s throat tightened. “Where?”
The priest turned his gaze toward the north. “Beneath the ruins. Follow the river’s bend until the moon turns red. There, beneath the oldest stone, you’ll find it, and the truth waiting with it.”
Before they could move, a shriek tore through the air. A creature, larger than the rest, burst from the earth. Its body was made of smoke and ash, its face a mask of bone. Its voice was not a sound it was a memory, screaming through time.
