Ghast arrived first, not in his cloud-skin but on four thunder-boned limbs: lion-shouldered, dragon-ribbed, seven tails flensing the air in agitated braids. Stormlight ran his seams; ozone gathered in his wake. He knelt and pressed a proud head to wet stone. The lake crept toward him and stopped, as if to gossip. Echidna’s smile was a curved blade. “You are early, my breath.” Ghast lifted his head. Four pale lights in the planes where eyes should have been flickered, then steadied. “Not early,” he said, voice a weather change. “Hungry. I tasted a name at the water’s edge, and it bit me back.”

The blazed section of his lamptern went dim, and in a flash, a pillar of light appeared with a blinding shockwave, making Jelnimia scream out in anguish as it tore open, almost consuming them.

The make ghost tilted his head towards Skye and opened his mouth. "Is she a Shadowsoul descendent," it asked me in a bone chilling tone that rattled the nerves. I nodded and told him her grandmother was Evanore Shadowsoul. The spectral nodded and asked me what I needed. I explained what I wanted and he told me to give him a day's time and he vanished completely before I could ask his name.

Zara reached into her crimson pantsuit and pulled out her encrypted, gold plated smartphone. She rapidly typed in an absolute, overriding analog sequence. "Darius used a federal ping to locate the ship's physical coordinates," Zara executed perfectly. "But he completely forgot that my mother designed the hull. I am initiating the Ghost Protocol." She tapped the screen.
