“What are you doing, Jazper Ray?”
He turned and saw little Erin. He couldn’t help but smile. She reminded him of the child who always picked flowers from their garden.
“Counting footsteps. Try it,” he said, starting to walk again. “Eighty-three… eighty-four…”
“Eighty-five,” Erin said, stepping into his footprints.
“Eighty-five footsteps and counting,” he repeated.
“Will we finish counting this?” she asked curiously.
He smiled at her, reaching out to touch her face. Her cheeks and lips were red from the cold. For a moment, it felt like he was looking at an angel who had come down from heaven.
