Chapter 1
I am walking down the cliffy road, it’s dark out with only the street lamp to illuminate my path. I am slightly cold and very irritated at my current situation. I had gotten to my car only to discover the battery dead. Obviously the car would not start, could not even unlock the bloody door via car remote.
Cursing as I walk slamming my feet loud and limp on the paved road trying to vent my frustration at the inconvenience. I had walked a good distance with my new ankle boots that looked pretty but provided no comfort on the paved road. Hungry, tired and now sore I came round a bend when I heard it again.
God I hated hearing it, yet no matter the place or how much time passed since I had heard them last they always returned. I remember the first time I heard it I was beyond terrified, now understanding that no harm came of it I had learnt to benefit from them. I look to my left, all I can see is pitch black forest, of course it would be to the forest.
Staring at it a while before blinking, I turn my gaze back on the road and keep going. The sound becoming more desperate and the need for my help becoming ever louder making me come to a halt.
I recall the last time they were like this. I had watched Jess vanish before my eyes, there one second, gone the next because I had ignored the call. I don’t know why I hear these things or how they knew of the things to come but I have been keeping safe with their help for as long as I can remember.
I sigh heavily and reluctantly make my way to the forest, having no idea how I am to see since I had no phone and there was no light in the forest with even the moon’s light blocked off by the thick trees. Feeling scared shitless after a few minutes of walking in the bloody dark I decide that I am not doing this anymore.
I turn to head back to the road when I hear an almost pleading sound from them. “ What would you have me do, I can’t see shit?” Light reaches my eye as I see them showing an almost path deeper into the woods. The light, like hot breath that had a soft blue glow to it.
After a few more minutes of walking I lose the light they had been providing. I continue to try and walk forward and trip over something. “ Fuck!” My hands come forward to shield my face from hitting the moist dirt in front of me, my long brunette hair cascading in front of my eyes. My hand met the ground as the mud seeps between my fingers. “ Gross” I say as I tried to lift myself up, remembering these boots were new and I was now pissed.
I look down at what I had tripped on, narrowing my eyes allowing them to adjust to the dark and dim lighting provided by the moon only to reveal a man covered in blood. I scream hurdling myself off him, my head kissing the floor. I hiss at my now migraine and wonder if I had again come too late for the call. Some tears run down my face just as the sound came.
After many years of being subjected to them I had begun to understand that some sounds meant a beckoning, another sadness, the faster one desperation or worry and this one being that of sympathy, only for the calling of beckoning to come again.
They only ever beckoned before the death so I fly up and go to the, I am hoping unconscious man. I hesitated for a moment looking at all the blood and noticing long claw marks over his body, torn skin by his ribs revealing bone, his arms looked beyond repair with deep gashes in them. I force my head on his chest to try and pick up a heartbeat.
I sigh in relieve as I hear the steady bump of his heart. I sit on my knees looking down at him not really sure how the hell I am meant to help, the man was nearly twice my size and muscle mass, looked like a fucking bear. What was he doing in here anyways? Pushing the thought aside for the time being I start examining the wounds on bear man, his arms were cut open but the skin held the torn muscle tight and mostly in place.
By the look of it, being no doctor but I had taken a first aid course once. I see the wound on his chest looked by far the worst with skin and muscle cut off hanging loose in flaps, I fight a gag and continue looking at the wound to see what needs to be done, moving closer to it I see that the bleeding seems to have stopped and am relieved since my thoughts when to stopping the blood first.
I halt my movement when I notice he is not wearing any clothes. My face burns with the image of his manhood on display and I turn my head to the side, is he part horse? Bear man indeed.
I stand thinking if I am to help him I am not looking at ‘that’ while most likely dragging his ass out of these woods. I remove my jacket, zip it up, and drag it over his surprisingly unscathed legs to cover the important bits. It’s a very tight fit but, I had gotten the jacket in a larger size since I like layering during winter. I look at him and see he is still out like a light.
A bit relieved since I don’t know what someone would think waking up to a stranger dressing them while still having open wounds all around, but the call seemed calm and so was I.
I figured I needed to start dragging this guy out, I feel his back and head for any unseen injuries before attempting to pull him, I am surprised by how soft his hair is and start pulling him in the direction of the road when the call comes, with a small light.
I say light but really it looked more like the hot breath of someone during winter, very hard to explain but I understood nonetheless and followed. I first turn his feet to face the correct way thinking that pulling on his arms or armpits would cause pain.
“ Christ” he was nearly impossible to move, he was a very bulky man, young and well…okay looking despite all the blood, I kind of wondered what his eyes would look like.
Chapter 34 Hadley Alucard raises a brow at my statement and I retreat to my nervous tick and fiddle with my fingers. I hope he doesn’t pick up on the light shake in my body. “I told her that I knew you would want to help us with the information we needed. The rogues don’t leave any scent and seem to disappear after every attack, they kill more people every time.” Zylith informs and that seems to catch his attention. His eyes dim and he straightens, “I would like a bit more detail.” He walks off halting just outside the door, “I will wait for you in my study.” He doesn’t wait for a reply and walks off. Zylith comes over to me taking my shaking hands into her steady ones. “Are you okay?” I quickly nod yes, “He scares me, I didn’t feel this scare with Cain and his people.” Zylith gives me a soft smile. We go to the study after putting on our shoes and a jacket. Alucard is standing with a book in hand but doesn’t glance up, he already knew we were coming. He closes the book with a l
Chapter 33 Hadley What caught my attention most was his burning red eyes in the dark. The sight terrified me to the bone. This was different from the wolfs, they had a sense of warning and intimidation to them but from this man I only sensed death. “Alucard. It’s me, Zylith.” Zylith said in a strained voice before dropping to the floor in a heap. “The little human?” His voice was smooth and emotionless, with an elegant English accent. Old vampire dude with an English accent, doesn’t that just sound right? I didn’t miss how both Cain and him called us little humans. We are not little these supernatural people are just overgrown. “Yeah you old bastard,” Zylith answered chest heaving. “So why the hell would you go and grab me like that? Scared of a little human girl?” The lights lit up again and his eyes faded to a beautiful brown. His nails pulled back into his fingers and I saw him give her a small smile. The only emotion to show on his face. She through insults at him but he was
Chapter 32 Hadley That night we couldn’t sleep, we probably needed the rest but my stomach wouldn’t allow it, doing constant flips and I considered not going a few times. We dressed warmly and prepared ourselves for the trip as best we could. We dressed warmly and rummaged the closet for any comfortable walking shoes. Zylith still had the boots they gave her for searching with the patrol. It was around 2 am when the call manifested in sound and light leading from my bedroom all the way into the woods. “Are you sure we will be safe?” I asked one last time and Zylith promised it would be fine. I wrote a small note for Cain, telling him that we were leaving to do something only we could and that we would be back. At the end, I put a small sorry and signed my name. I have to say the glowing trail did make things a great deal easier. We sneaked into the hall and saw a different path from before leading to a section of the mansion we had not been. I told Zylith about the path, the cal
Chapter 31HadleyAttempting to sneak back into the lounge was a resounding failure. Everyone gave us knowing glances and after passing the mirror above the console table I knew why. My cheeks were flushed and my hair a bit messy. From my rose cheeks, erased lipstick and the fact that Cain and I had been all alone, it was pretty obvious what went on.Everyone chatted till late at night and I have to say, it was the most fun I had in a long time. It was a wonderful feeling being so accepted, feeling so normal. I couldn’t help but look over at Cain the entire night, he was all I could see.Everyone went home leaving Zylith, Cain and I alone in the mansion. Zylith went off to take a shower and get ready for bed. I walked over to Cain in the hall after Zylith left and in an act of bravery, I cautiously embraced him in a hug.He seemed surprised at first but very quickly relaxed into my embrace and wrapped me up in his arms. It was warm, he smelt nice and I don’t recall ever feeling so saf
Chapter 30CainI love seeing the effect I have on my little human, the bond causes intense attraction between two mates and she was no exception. I had my eye on her throughout the entire meal, why the hell was she so far away?Seeing her looking our way I just couldn’t stop myself from going to her, but I required an excuse to do so. I handed her the drink and couldn’t help but stare. She hated it, I took advantage of the opportunity to inch closer to her.‘I see things are going well.’ Alec’s irritating voice comes through the link.‘Fuck off,’ I reply curtly, irritation laced in my words at the unwelcomed interruption. They have intruded enough as is. I do not look away from Hadley for a second.‘I see Zylith is all but forgotten.’ He still continues through the link.‘That was a misunderstanding. She likes men.’ I say with a bit of smugness.‘Oh thank the goddess! The entire pack has been on edge. Alec shouts through the link and shortly after I hear almost every wolf in the room
Chapter 29 Hadley After explaining that Zylith was not the love of my life, Cain guided me downstairs to the others and I apologized for my abrupt and very rude exit. Everyone was more than understanding, kind even, which only made me feel like more of an asshole. Cain told me that we would all be having dinner after eight. Erica swept me away for the day. Alec and Avery abandoned me to the never-ending energy that was Erica. Does she never tire? God my feet are killing me and I felt like I have lost track of all time. Erica put me in a black dress that was far too tight, reaching knee length with it being longer in the back and long sleeves. The front was high reaching my collar bone, while the back ran low completely exposing my skin. This was too much I thought until I saw the underwear… what was even the point, I can see right through it? The heels were painfully high and after tripping over my own feet four times she gave in and let me have lower but equally pretty heels. The
