I rear against him, a defense reflex that immediately transforms into counterattack. My nails, long and varnished dark red, dig into the skin of his back. I rake, I gouge, seeking to inflict a mark as indelible as his is upon me. He grunts, a muffled sound of defiance, and drives his response deeper, changing angle, seeking the point that will make me yield. Breathing becomes a duel of gasping, hissing breaths. The air in the room, already warm, thickens with the musky odor of sex, of salty sweat, and that more primitive effluvium, that of conflict and domination.
