Somewhere in the city—several stories above, in a steel and glass building—Julian Blackwood lay in his dark, sleek bedroom, staring at the book she had given him. He'd never intended to keep it. When Lena Carter had offered it to him—those gentle words, that thoughtful crease between her eyebrows—he'd intended to refuse. But something in her eyes had taken away his intention. It was neither flirting nor pretense. It was genuine. Silent. Generous. He hated kindness. It broke things open. Julian gazed down at the book. The cover was unadorned, the title in gold print: *A Man Called Ove*. He remembered Lena's words:

"I'm in the mid-dle of a book called Christine right now. I circle different authors, and when I find ones I like, I go through the backlist, but not all at once, and I'm back on Stephen King for now. After that one, I'll read Carrie and The Shining, then find something else to read." "Really?" Evan said, glancing at me, a wide grin on his face. Before I could ask why he was so happy, he told me. "I love Stephen King books. There are some newer ones out, but some of my favorites are some of the older ones. How did you get into it? It's all horror stuff. Most people get squeamish." I shrugged. I got squeamish about bugs and snakes, but what's there to be scared of from a book?

Evan was behind bars and this chapter was closed. It was well and truly over.

I stare at him. Sophie makes a sound behind me. "Daddy said he sent a book," Evan says helpfully. Of course he did. Of course Derek told his three year old he sent the book. "Better than the book," I say. Evan grins, wide and uncomplicated, and it is Derek's grin but also not Derek's grin at all... something entirely new, and I stand back up with the clay Arlo in my hands and feel something move through my chest that I was not prepared for.

She rummaged in the bag again and pulled out a small black pouch—cookies, from the smell of them—and started nibbling one without a care. “There’s real food on the dining table if you change your mind,” I said, sliding her glass across. “I’m good,” she answered, shaking her head. “Not hungry.” We clinked bottles lightly and drank. The sweet, fizzy bite helped steady me a little. “So…” I let the word hang, watching her over the rim of my glass. “You said you met a fan?” Eve chuckled, licking a crumb from her lip. “Yeah. He was really sweet.”

She laughed until a passing librarian shushed her with a finger to her lips. *** I unloaded all of my borrowed economics books on my bed and heaved a sigh. This was a lot more than I'd planned to bring, but they had all looked helpful and I couldn't choose. Maybe I should have waited for Ken like he had suggested, but I wanted to do at least this much on my own. I was so engrossed in examining the books that I didn't notice Evan walking into my bedroom. "Those aren't good for beginners. Except maybe that one." He approached my right and picked up a blue textbook, hefting it in one hand. "But this edition changed a lot of things. Bearing his love mode was pathetic. Everything was going smooth and normal until I discovered something that I shouldn't have. Something that turned him against me. Something I was not prepared for! Evan chuckled and Viso looked at him with a deep frown. "Have you been reading those books again?" Viso asked, pressing his lips in revulsion. He knew how obsessed Evan was with 'Those' books apart from his wine collection. "Since when did you start calling sex a sin?" Evan let out a throaty laugh. "Compagno. You broke the momentum. Don't talk about Those Sacred Books. It doesn't talk about sex and you know it." Viso only raised his eyebrows as Evan shared his brilliant plan to help his Compagno. "The only way to get what you want is through getting into her pants."

Liam lowered his gaze with a faint smile. “I don’t know if I deserve that chance after everything I did to you.” Evanka smiled faintly. “No one deserves it immediately. People learn. You can too.” Both of them turned toward Evan, who now sat in Isabel’s lap, enthusiastically showing dinosaur pictures from a children’s book. “Nana, look! This one is huge!” Evan laughed brightly. “I want to grow big like this, but I only eat waffles.” Isabel burst into laughter. “Oh Lord, this child is adorable. Liam, he’s exactly like you when you were little. Just as stubborn, but softhearted. Apparently he wants to become a T-Rex that eats waffles.”
