I knew it was her, coming back to see me. The End.

Because we all knew the truth. This wasn’t just a battle. This was the war to end all wars. And I had no idea if we could win.

She had been circling the ending for weeks. Not because she did not know what it was — she had told Yetunde truthfully that she knew exactly what it was moving toward, and that was still true, had remained true through all the weeks of writing that had brought her to this point. The knowing was not the problem. The knowing had been there from almost the beginning, sitting at the back of everything she had written like a destination she could feel even when she could not yet see it.

I had survived one of the craziest nights of my life. And even though I was safe… Deep inside, I knew this wasn’t the end.
