I was stunned that I could come across Evie who suddenly disappeared one fateful day. I smirked scornfully, parted my lips as I held tight my phone to my ear. “Evie, so you can come to me and apologize. So evil of you.” I finally rebuked her. I don't understand how these people will just run away and come back with a fake cry. My heart became cold and anger bubbled up inside me. “Evie,” I screamed at her, voice laced with disdain. “You're very evil and a traitor. There is nothing between us again, you bloody liar.”

"Oh damn, I won't let myself cry in front of you because you'll just laugh at me." "No, I won't do that." "Then what will you do?" "I'll come and kick the face of the guy who made you cry. Do you want me to prove it?" "I'll contact you if I meet the person who made me cry. You can kick his face and break his leg. Can I trust you, right?" "Of course, just tell me when you'll meet him." "I will—" Eve's steps and words stopped when she saw someone standing behind her apartment's stove—looking very out of place there and everything in her kitchen.

They were excited, like a pack of starving coyotes tearing into a piece of bloody meat, and I was the man who was being flayed alive without even realizing it.

The seven-year-old revealed that her name is Evie. “Attacked?” I ask. The girl nods. “Who? What pack?” Evie’s expression tightens, her small hands curling into the blanket. “I… don’t know. I just heard screams and blood… blood everywhere. And…” She pauses, staring down at her lap. “And?” Antonio asks. “It’s okay. You’re safe here,” Valeria says gently, caressing her back. Evie swallows hard. “Red eyes… I saw red eyes…”

“This is less than a dog’s food!” “Alpha,” she stammered, trembling as she bowed repeatedly. “This is… this is what she ordered.” My gaze snapped to Eve. "What is the meaning of this, Eve?” My voice was lower this time but somehow more dangerous—sharper, angrier, sliding under her skin like a blade. “Why would you order this?” Her eyes lifted slowly, and for the first time tonight, she looked me directly in the face, jaw set, shoulders tense… like she was done letting me see her crumble.

“He’s an ecosystem. A living network. And from what our intel suggests… he’s evolved.” “How?” I demanded. A faint hesitation. “He merged,” Eli said. “With Adam Cindry’s neural architecture. Something experimental. Something we were never supposed to see outside of a lab.” I felt the room tilt slightly. “And the result?” “Unstoppable,” Eli replied flatly. “Eve—our most advanced counter-AI—couldn’t last five minutes.” Five minutes. That was all it took to erase our best defense. I ran a hand down my face.

I tried pulling away from him but he was to strong, I had to save Evie. "No, we can't leave her here! I promised she could come with us! Let me go!" But still I had no strength to break his hold and what I saw next made me scream bloody murder. The evil woman stepped behind Evie and took a large knife, driving it across her throat. Evie kept her eyes on me the entire time, tears rushing down her cheek as she grabbed her neck to stop the blood. Slowly I watched as life left her eyes and she fell to the ground.

Maybe if he had been more than a coward then the outcome will be a bit different. He was going to just remain by her side as a friend and watch out for her. Maybe this wasn’t meant to be. He was happy to see that she was happy and doing okay. After the last class for the day the students were cheering happily and they all left the classroom with their satchels. Evie was seventeen and came from a middle-class family, both of her parents were primary school teachers and very loving and caring. Evie was the second child and the only girl in the family.

Ethan's grip tightened on my arm as we reached his bedroom, pulling me away from my thoughts. “What is it?” I ask him calmly, urging him to sit down.
