The Beta's Daughter
“Hi, Eva.”
Eva had dark brown skin, dark eyebrows and eyes, a lean, muscular body, and a flaming head of bright red hair. I’d always thought she was stunning; even when I was a child she’d had her hair dyed red, and I’d looked up to it and her, wishing desperately for hair that colour. I’d asked my parents why I couldn’t have such pretty hair, once, and they’d explained that she’d put that colour on her hair, that it wasn’t there naturally. Later that day they’d found Jacob and I rubbing rose petals against my scalp.
“Young Beta Arienne,” she beamed, and then bowed her head. “You look beautiful tonight. As do you, Rosa,” she added, turning her smile to Rosa.
