A ghost of a smile appeared on her lips but it eventually vanished. “He went out first. The team needed him immediately.” I nodded and shyly stood up from bed. Of course, he’s the Alpha. When Adrian Hale chose Rosalie Quinn for the tenth time, I was hanging helplessly over the cliff’s edge. He clutched a rope in one hand, the web between his thumb and forefinger worn raw and bloody. Rosalie was sobbing so hard she could barely breathe. “Adrian, I’m scared…” He hesitated for only a second before pulling out a dagger and cutting through the rope on my side. “Clara, hold on. He snatched it up, recognizing Abbott’s administrative frequency. "Give me the logs," Kaelen commanded, his voice a low rumble. "The investigator just returned from the Expanse sectors, Alpha," Abbott reported, his breathing heavy as if he had been running the data pipelines all evening. "The history is... remarkably grim." Kaelen’s jaw locked, his scent turning sharp with an uninvited tension. "Spit it out."

"Do you know where she is? Is she okay?" I spit out my worries about Jo, wishing for any news of her safety. I asked Chief Kapono if any of his people had seen a red-haired woman. "Relax, Miss Thea," he said, placing a hand on the back of the young woman whom he had been talking to earlier. "This is Ten-Ten, my granddaughter. She was with her friends scouting two nights ago after we captured you and your friends. She will explain." Ten-Ten looks like a warrior than a princess. She had sun-kissed skin and wore light, easy-to-move clothes. Bandage clothes strapped around her arms and legs, her hair loose and red war paint over her face and eyes. She, too, has tattoos on both arms.

I was so over this crap, I just wanted Charlie back in my arms, it was horrible with her being so far away “You are supposed to be my brother, do you not want to help me?” “It’s not that I don’t want to help, I just think we might be falling into a trap” Kayla comes quickly into the office carrying a large book, she looks flustered as she slams the open book down on the table sending bits of dust everywhere and making me cough. Kayla apologises and asks if we have heard about the one to rule them all. I look at Alexander and he looks just as puzzled as me “What do you mean the one to rule them all?”

“Give me five.” “Don’t be long,” Sophia said when she picked up. “They’re watching the building. Be careful.” “Always,” Elara lied. She did not want Sophia to hear panic. Her voice came steady. “I’ll be down.” She packed fast. Each motion had the calm of someone leaving a station for good. A sweater, two dresses, the blue case Sophia told her to bring—papers, an extra passport tucked inside. She wrapped the child’s small blanket and tucked it into the case last, feeling both shame and fierce hope.
