The ground shook beneath thousands of pounding feet. Alina glanced back once and immediately regretted it. The army stretched across the horizon. An endless sea of pale bodies rushing toward them. And above the army. Far above. Something else was watching. Something huge. Something hidden. The Observer wasn't looking at the fragments. It wasn't looking at the collapsing Archive. It wasn't looking at Aria or Evelyn. It was staring into the distance. Toward a section of darkness beyond the broken horizon. A place where even the Observer seemed cautious.

I should have been doing something useful. But I couldn’t stop looking at her. “You know you look cute when you blush?” she asked, without taking her eyes off the window. “I don’t blush.” “You do. I saw it.” “You saw wrong.” “I never see wrong.” She turned to me, eyes sparkling. “I observe. I always observe.” “What do you observe?” “Everything. You. The way you move. The silence you carry. The way you look at people without really seeing them, until you decide it’s worth seeing.”

He was looking down and flapping his wings. “Can we get closer?” Olive asked. “No need. I can see clearly. It's here.” “You're the one who can see, not—” Olive stopped because she felt a twist in her vision. She was no longer seeing clouds and blue sky. She was looking through Calor's eyes at the camp miles below.
