“I’ve waited a long time to meet you in the flesh.” Lira blocked my path, her jaw clenched, shoulders rigid. “You’re not supposed to be alive,” she said. Wraith tilted his head. “Neither are you. But here we are. Like a family reunion... except one of us brought the matches.” The others behind him didn’t speak. They stood in a loose arc, some twitching, some humming softly, all of them watching me like wolves waiting for the weakest step. I could smell the decay on them. Something about their minds had snapped and been stitched back together wrong.

My study becomes a war room, papers and books scattered across every surface, notes scrawled in margins as I piece together everything I can find about the creature we're facing. The wraith is old. Ancient. One of the few remaining creatures from an era when magic ran wild and unchecked through the world. It feeds on emotional memories—the bonds between mates, between parents and children, between friends. The stronger the emotion, the more powerful the memory, the more sustenance it provides. Which means it will sense me coming from miles away. My shields are strong, yes. But they're also a beacon. A challenge. The creature will know someone with power is near, and it will come for me.

The Rift is shaping them and learning, adapting.” The first of them appeared as a blur, almost indistinct, limbs fractured and shifting unnaturally. Faces flickered in and out of recognition, eyes hollow yet filled with hunger. I felt a wave of nausea, fear, and awe all at once.

He took a step forward— And the ground beneath them trembled. A deafening howl split the air, primal and enraged. Shadows shifted in the ruins below, moving unnaturally fast. Then, from the darkness, they emerged. Wraiths. Not quite werewolf, not quite human—twisted beings caught between forms, their bodies flickering as if reality struggled to contain them. Their eyes burned with unnatural fire, and their snarls carried the weight of the damned. Bram drew his blade. “I hate this place.” Freya’s daggers gleamed as she fell into a ready stance. “We hold our ground.”

She collapsed into the empty seat, watching until he was gone from the room.
