I wrote a brief description of the contents of the book on a sticky note and placed it on the first page before dropping the book on the floor beside me. The sound of the heavy book landing on the books beneath it disrupted Elijah. He mumbled slightly then moved so that his head was resting on my shoulder. It would be very difficult for me to get anything done with him resting on me like this. Even so, I didn’t want to move him. He was coping with the reduced sleep much worse than I was, he needed all the rest he could get.

Where would I even start? "Intimidation," I murmured. "Power dynamics. Alpha behavior." I moved along the shelves, scanning titles, pulling out books, and setting them aside. My mother's organizational system was beginning to make sense to me; she had grouped books by topic, with the most important or frequently referenced ones at eye level. And then I saw it. A thick volume bound in dark leather, its title stamped in gold, "Mastering the Council: A Guide to Navigating Alpha Politics."

I stopped walking and walked towards the shelf on my left. I tilted my head sidewards to read the titles of the different books in front of me. They're too many I wanted to read something that's worth my time. I was looking at the books arranged on my eye level. A rainbow-colored spine of the book caught my attention. I pulled the book slowly. The nail of my pointing finger touched the top edge of the book as it easily popped in front of me. It created an inch of a space where the book was inserted. I almost had a heart attack when someone on the other side of the shelf grinned in front of me.

"How have you been?" Now that I'm inside this church, terrible, he replied internally. "Incredible," he said, saying something different outwardly. "I'm glad," Joshua smiled as they walked to the second floor of the church. "Thank you for coming to help us with organizing the shelves. I won't give you too much to do," he said, entering what was the library. "This shelf is called 'Fallen Books.' All the books here are listed by name and author, so it should be easier for you to organize them. If you have any questions, I'll be at the back on the left-hand side, or Miss Nelly, the secretary, will be there. Is that alright?"

I drop the book in my arms to save myself. It takes me a second to realize I'm clutching his arms—his very solid, muscular arms. My nails are digging into his black work shirt. Focus, Nora.
