A mercenary. Lucian didn't offer help. He jammed the barrel of the revolver into the man’s broken shoulder. The man screamed, his eyes snapping open. "Who sent you?" Lucian demanded, his voice barely a whisper over the rain. The mercenary coughed, blood bubbling on his lips. He looked at Lucian not with fear, but with a strange, professional resignation. "He said... you’d be... sentimental."

Before the man could recover, Ethan drove the butt of his heavy pistol hard into the mercenary’s temple. The mercenary’s head whipped sideways, his eyes rolling back as his knees buckled. He dropped onto the foam-covered concrete like a sack of lead. The lead mercenary wiped the thick chemical foam from his mask visor, bringing his short-barrel carbine up to lock onto Ethan’s chest from five feet away. "Die, you bastard!"
