Venom & Vows
It is a foundational, abhorrent, non-negotiable fact about who I am as a person.
I was twenty-three, sleeping in the Athens house, when I woke at two in the morning to something moving through my hair across the pillow. I opened my eyes. It was the size of my palm. Eight eyes in two rows, catching the faint light from the window. Jointed legs, each one articulated, moving with a deliberate, horrifying precision across the pillow case. Pincers. I saw the pincers. I cried for forty minutes after I got it out of the room and I am not embarrassed to say so.
I would sooner marry Maksim Orlov and wear his engraved collar than voluntarily relocate to a continent where that is a regular occurrence.
