“Don’t worry. This is the last time. You have my word. It will never happen—” I lifted my arm and interrupted him. “Go. I’m honestly not bothered, really!” Tears streamed down my cheeks. The tears didn’t come from a place of sadness. This was the hundredth time August delayed the mating ritual. I was free at last! As August walked away in relief, I breathed easy. Never again would I have to watch them wrapped up in their affection. My world no longer revolved around August. I didn’t have to play the part of his loving mate, bending to his will.

Julian finally loosened his hold on me under my steady gaze. "I'll show up on our 100th proposal," he promised before hurrying away.

Her disappointment stung harder than the IV in my arm. "Shawn is the head of a mafia family. Ruthless and cold. Do you think a man like that would ever be gentle to a woman who tricked him into marriage? Do you think using suicide will make him care?" She scoffed. "Grow up. Why did you string me along if you couldn't commit?" I'd always kept my cool, raised to be polite. But that just got me walked over, again and again. My decency was seen as a weakness. Their expressions all shifted. Felicity clung to my hand, desperate. "Make it clear. You can't just throw away those ten years." I laughed, turning it back on her. "Who threw it away? You posted with him, never explaining." "Julian took my phone and posted it," she argued, her veins pulsing.
