I stepped outside and I froze.
The garden was made of stone paths and perfect hedges and trees that didn’t move, flowers that looked too perfect and a garden that was too good to be true. Everything was too clean and too quiet, like it had been created, not for life, but for control and in the center of it, there was a stone table which was empty but she had been here. I knew it.
I stepped forward slowly, my boots crunching on the gravel. My eyes scanned everything, looking for her, for danger, for any sign that I hadn’t lost my mind. Then I heard a slow clap.
