Leo went first, landing on the wet sand with a heavy thud that didn't splash. I followed,
then Kai and Silas.
The heat hit us instantly. It wasn't the dry, clean cold of the Yukon. It was a suffocating,
wet blanket of humidity that smelled of rotting vegetation, sulfur, and ancient chemicals.
"Home sweet hell," Kai muttered, slapping a mosquito that had already landed on his
neck. "I forgot how much this place smells like boiled eggs."
"It smells like life," Leo said.
He stood on the edge of the water, looking out into the dense fog that obscured the
cypress trees. He took a deep breath.
