He took deep breaths, recovering from the nightmare he just had. Standing up, he walked into the night, through the waist high bushes and thick mud towards the gushing sound of running water. There was a thick mist rising through the trees, the damp air carrying with it the smell of rotten leaves. Nothing was as it seemed, and yet, nothing was odd to Cory. Not even the moon that fell too close to the earth, staying just few centimeters above the top of the trees, following his every movement.

SPLASH! A disgusting, squishy sound, the car jerks, then stops. Heavy silence settles, we both freeze, breathing hard. “Did we just—” “Yes.” Another pause, still way too close. I blinked and looked around. “…Are we in a swamp?” He looks out, then back at me. “…Marsh.” “THIS IS NOT BETTER!” I push slightly off him, trying to sit up, only to hear a wet squelch sound. I froze, fear settling in now.

I looked up, ready to fight whatever had dropped me here. The growl died in my throat. This was not my forest. The air was thick, humid, and smelled faintly of rot and stagnant water. I stood in a swampy morass. Around me, ancient, skeletal trees clawed at a sky that was neither day nor night, but a bruised, hazy gray. Ruins of colossal stone structures jutted from the muck, covered in weeping moss. The only light came from strange, bulbous mushrooms that glowed with sickly blue and yellow neon, casting long, shivering shadows. A shallow river of sludge wound through the alien landscape, reflecting the eerie light.

Suddenly the rope began vibrating as the rope was showing signs of reaching its limit, as the block holding the knife pulled out and went towards Natsu direction with lots of speed and force. As the rock came in contact with the swamp, a very loud noise was heard as it echoed through out the forest. Booommmm!!!! Immediately the rock landed on the swamp, it caused the swamp to splash, as it looked like a large bomb exploding underwater, causing a big splash which made it to spread out. The rock broke as the blade continued moving into the swamp heading towards Natsu.

"The swamps are dangerous. Unstable ground, sinkholes, creatures that have not been seen in centuries. She is trying to lose us." "Then we do not let her." Niklas checked the blade at his hip, his face hard. "She has caused enough death. It ends today." They moved through the forest quickly, following the trail of blood and broken branches. The trees grew thinner as they approached the swamps, replaced by twisted willows and ancient cypresses whose roots rose from the water like grasping fingers. The air grew thick and heavy, humming with insects and the distant call of birds that sounded almost like laughter.

“Please, we just want help for a family from being hunted.” Out of nowhere, the water rose up and formed the figure of a man. The man glared at us with hatred. “You are disturbing me,” the man said, and I realized he was the swamp itself. "I don't let anyone with bad intentions pass through; people have said barbaric things to pass through and hunt the animals in this place. I will not allow this." “We did not lie,” I said sternly. "We came on a rescue mission; you must know that near your territory a rare family stays. We came on behalf of the father to get them out of here because they may be in danger. Vampires may hunt them."

But still, despite the sweat that coats my brow, and the tremble of my body, I pull myself up straighter and continue down the path we make through the soggy ground and dark waters. River carries CeCe up ahead, naming the things we see around, the types of trees, wildflowers, the creatures we encounter in the underbrush both big and small. He knows a lot about the swamp. He plucks a salamander from the mud to give us both a better look and encourages us to feel its smooth skin. CeCe does so, but I shake my head, as I know this isn’t a picnic in the woods. The marsh stank of rot and stagnant water. Mist clung to the pools like torn sheets, drifting in slow curls that made the reeds look like they were breathing. Every step Thomas took sank into mud, a wet sound that stuck to his ears. Wolves hated swamps. They belonged to ghosts and witches, not packs and kings.
