Stopped. Walked in. A kid, maybe twenty, stood behind the counter, staring at his phone. "Do you have books for teenagers?" He looked up. "Like, Young Adult?" "I don't know. Sixteen-year-olds." "Yeah. YA section's in the back." I walked to the back. Found shelves labeled Young Adult Fiction. Pulled out a book at random. Read the back. Something about dragons. Shoved it back in. Pulled out another. Read the back.

Hopefully one or two things will catch your fancy in the matter of character adjustments and or hope for survival. I am a bookworm, a book lover I mean. I've always been one right from kindergarten. I read so much books I felt I would explode one day if I didn't stop. I didn't stop, and I also did not explode. Instead, they made me smarter. I read mystery books, thrillers and fantasies or general kid books. I read teen fiction too but I stayed away from horror. Mom bought me all of my books. I've got at least seventy books in my bookshelf and mom got them all for me. It was not a problem for her at all.

"That's tots fabulous! Isn't Ms. OG just amazing?" "Like tots! I can't believe she started writing only a few months ago!" "Me neither. But I'm glad she did." I pretended to surf through a pile of books when the two teens passed by still giggling. I gathered the books I'd already found and went around the rack to the isle the girls had been at, trying to find what they thought worth bragging. Unsurprisingly, I ended up in the erotic section. "Of course." I shook my head, what else could a bunch of teenage girls be giggling about? "Been there, done that."

Eventually, with my arms full, I found Nicholas still in the fantasy section. He was engrossed in a thick hardcover, his brow furrowed in concentration. “Find something good?” I asked, approaching him. “Possibly. But I think you might like this one.” He handed me a paperback with an image of a woman wielding a sword on the front. I read the title aloud. “‘The Lycan Chronicles.’ Hmm, never heard of it.” “It’s a fantasy series,” he explained, still flipping through his own book. “Great world-building, complex characters...” He glanced up and smirked. “Plus, it has some... steamy scenes.”

“He’s a dragon, but he’s also a handsome boy. But his brother’s even more handsome, and he’s an even bigger dragon!” Apparently, teenage girls liked shitty books no matter which world you happened to be in. The library wasn’t particularly big, about the size of a large living room, but the walls were covered in shelves, and each shelf was full of books. I skimmed the spines looking for any interesting titles. “When I said books about magic, I meant books that teach you how to do magic, not silly stories for little girls.”

This time I can't help but laugh when she runs into her sister and makes her run to the bus in a hurry, as if the police were going to search her bag. We turn to the next page at the same time. "What the hell?" I look at her out of the corner of my eye, her face is a story, she is reading "Frankenstein" and on each page she is surprised with what Victor thinks. I'm with Hazel and Augustus and I'm not making sense of this. Is it supposed to be cute? I don't read this teenage shit. I always read science, police, action, torture methods. Not teen romance and sad shit. Caleb's life is already sad without me.

I wandered toward the fiction section, running my fingers along a row of spines, pulling one out here and there to read the back cover. “What’s this one?” Kade asked, picking up a battered paperback I’d set aside. “Oh, that one’s really good,” I said, my voice picking up speed the way it always did when I talked about books. “It’s about this girl who discovers she’s part of this ancient bloodline nobody knew existed, and she has to figure out who she can trust while everyone around her is lying to her. It’s got this whole slow burn romance woven through it too, and the writing is just…”

I mumbled to myself. That is accurate. Why can't they have only one or two truly good textbooks instead of publishing three, four, or even more interesting ones? I chose one of them and noticed that it was about a conflict between good and bad fairies, so I promptly returned it. No, I'm not reading five hundred pages of fictional tension and three fairy blatant hunks squabbling for a freaking so usual Disney princess. Give me a werewolf or vampire story with some alpha males on it any day.
