He didn’t argue. He didn’t even speak. He simply turned, trembling, and left the room, his footsteps echoing like a countdown to his inevitable downfall.
Once the door closed, I turned to Noelle, voice softening slightly.
“He won’t come back. Not to hurt you. Not to manipulate anyone else. You’re safe now.”
She nodded, still processing, her eyes scanning the empty doorway where Austin had vanished. I could see the storm in her mind the anger, the relief, the betrayal all colliding.
