A quiet rage was simmering inside him. “So she wasn’t coming? Fine by me. Let her miss the cake. That’s what she gets,” he thought to himself. The elegant three-tier cake was rolled out, cut into neat slices, and passed around to the guests. Jake shoved a large piece into his mouth like he was trying to chew his anger away. The music grew louder. A second whipped cream cake appeared, and within moments, the party turned into a full-blown cake fight. Jake slipped away to the bathroom and pulled out his phone.

I thought Sabine would win and destroy the day for all of us. But I was with my kids. And they were happy. After we talked for a while, I had to leave them because I had other things to take care of. I still had to welcome some of the guests I had invited. Thirty minutes passed and I was done greeting everyone. Then it was time to cut the cake. I led Jack and Jade to their beautiful cakes. Maybe you’ll be more receptive to those.” Fiona laughed, her eyes softening with affection. “I think that’s more my speed,” she admitted, stepping closer to inspect the box. The cakes inside were beautifully crafted, delicate layers of sponge and frosting that spoke to the craftsmanship of Davao’s best bakeries. The sight of them made Fiona’s mouth water. “Perfect,” she said, picking up a cake and setting it on the counter. “Now, tell me all about your trip.
