“That’s partly what I wanted to add to the book. I didn’t remember until I saw it the other day.” I watch her flip through pages covered in drawings and diagrams. She pauses at a section in the middle of the book. “The red flame you saw, they call that the Phoenix. It’s the sign of a successful Awakening,” she says, pointing to a page filled with writing. “What’s an Awakening?” I ask. “It’s a very, very old war ritual. They used to use it on mortally wounded dragons, it heals them and brings them back physically stronger than before,” she says.

I sat back, staring at her in absolute, unadulterated admiration. She was bruised, she was bleeding from wounds that ran years deep, but she was entirely unbroken. Her defiance wasn't just survival, it was a force of nature. She was a phoenix standing in the middle of her own ashes, ready to set the world on fire. Without a word, I leaned forward, closing the distance between us. I reached out, my broad, warm hand gently cupping the side of her face, my thumb wiping away the remaining moisture on her cheek.

Her eyes were luminous, metallic, ancient. Lyra whispered, awestruck, “Silvermoon reborn.” I had never seen anything more beautiful in my life. SERA Everything was sharp. Clear. Alive. The world smelled like a thousand new scents. The forest whispered. The wind spoke. I could hear heartbeats, mine and— Kade’s. Strong. Familiar. Home. I stretched my new limbs, marveling at the strength singing through them. I ran. Gods, I ran. Through trees, over roots, across the earth—power thrumming in every step. Freedom like I’d never imagined.

In the distance, wolves cried out as the trees bent nearly to the breaking point. ​The silver-eyed man shouted, his voice cracking with the strain of the atmosphere. “If the First Flame rises fully, the frame can’t hold both forces! One of them has to break!” ​“Which one?” I asked. ​He looked at me, and for the first time, I saw hope in his eyes. “The one that’s built on rules.” ​The cold presence gathered itself like a massive storm wall. ​Initiating overwrite. ​The heat answered. The ground split wider, and light poured up—not blinding, but alive. It was fire that remembered being a sun. I gasped as the ember in my chest finally tore open.

I keep expecting the fire to burn me, to leave blisters like I saw on my father when he passed. “You need to get out, it’s going to collapse!” Fenian says, rushing up to me. He is also carrying two women. These are passed out, one over his shoulders and one in his arms. “I have to get Emmi!” I yell. As I run through the center, I pull my earth element, reinforcing the walls with dirt and sand, noticing that some of it is getting so hot that it’s melting into glass. “EMMI!” I yell again. I push through the fire, unable to see anything but flames and smoke. When I finally find her, she’s on the floor, sitting in a tight ball, her hands over her ears, rocking as she screams.

“You are not the last, Kora. You are the first of the new.” My pulse raced. “What do you want from me?” “To remember,” she said softly. “To awaken what still sleeps within the fire.” The flames around her flared, swallowing everything in light. When I woke, the ground beneath me was glowing brighter — and the air was no longer just hot. It was alive. The Ember Plains had heard me. And they were answering.
