Then everything went black as I was shrouded in the shadows of goodbye to all that I had ever known. After what must have been hours later, I awoke in an unfamiliar place. Fog surrounds me as hooded figures chant in a strange language. I try to move but I can't because my arms and legs are tied to a boulder with weird cravings in it. I try to scream but my voice comes out as a mere whisper. Shadows dance on the walls of this desolate cave before the ground begins to shake. The hooded figures fall to their knees and keep their eyes on the trembling ground.

Freeway noted softly, his own face twisted in a cold, hard smile. It was almost dusk when Freeway saw a fat man striding on his path down the sidewalk with a large body encompassing an evil shadow behind. Freeway's eyes slanted in surprise. There was something wrong with the man's face, his features black with perspiration, and his eyes darting back over each other move. Freeway smiled to himself, snarling, "My goodness… Looks like he's seen a ghost." He edged forward slightly, trying not to be seen.

One hand gripped the back of her neck, forcing her still as he pounded into her mercilessly. His eyes found mine instantly, a slow, satisfied smirk curving his lips. “Get a seat, love. And watch me.” Without hesitation, I slid into the comfortable sofa facing the bed, crossing one leg over the other as I removed my cap. Resting my hands on the armrest as I watched him like he asked. After all, this was my life as the Alpha’s Shadow. Doing whatever he asked, even when it ate at me.

“…Well. They don’t have to like it for very long.” Understanding dawned on them. Horror filled their faces. “Alpha, no…” “You had your chance to serve loyally. You chose to complaint instead.” The shadows moved quickly. Wrapping around throats. Squeezing.All five of them. Dying at once. They struggled. Clawed at the shadows that were crushing their windpipes. But shadow magic didn’t release. Didn’t show mercy. I watched dispassionately as they died. One by one. Faces turning purple. Eyes bulging. Their life draining away.

I leaned my head back against his shoulder, closing my eyes for a fraction of a second to absorb the sheer, magnificent gravity of the moment. "They are incredible," I whispered, turning my face to press a kiss against the side of his neck. "They are free," Victor corrected softly, his voice a dark, resonant hum vibrating against my spine. "We are all finally free, Cassie. The shadows have nothing left to hold over us."

With people threatening to leave, Shane had to suck it up and make a call. "Well, looks like we're not waiting for Lily. "Let's get this party started." The moment he said that, the lights in the hall cut out, throwing us all into pitch black. A second later, the LED screen at the back blazed to life. As grumbles filled the air, a video flashed onto the screen. It showed Shane and Joanna, caught in a compromising moment right beside my hospital bed. The crowd gasped in shock. Shane's face went ashen, and he shouted at the tech crew, "Who dared to play that video? Take it down now!"

Prue said. I grabbed my phone and placed it in my purse. With that, we were off and out of the door. The taxi dropped us off at Flares bar. I rolled my eyes as I didn’t want a big night out, but Flares meant a big night out. Especially now Cleo had Prue encouraging her as well. I headed to the bar and ordered the first round of drinks. “I’m glad it’s Friday,” I laughed as I handed the drinks to the girls. “Oh, come on, we won’t get too drunk.” Cleo laughed.

Then the shadows crept in through the windows all around us, thin dark tendrils sliding across the floor like they had a mind of their own, reaching for the walls, for the doors, reaching straight for us. "Ethan, look out!" Freya shouted, grabbing my arm and pulling me back a step. I spun around just in time to see one of the tendrils move toward the desk where the phone still sat, dead and silent. It shattered the second the shadow touched it, black smoke rising from the broken pieces like something was laughing at us. "They knew," Freya said, moving toward the door, her eyes wide with fear. "They knew we were about to find out the truth, and they cut her off before she could tell us."

The shadows trap the vampires who try to escape, consuming them in silence. Baron grins and leaps upward, climbing the latticework of metal beams with ease. I chase after him. The steel rattles beneath us as we ascend. He weakens the structure around me, trying to make me fall, but he forgets that the night belongs to me. The darkness bends to my will, forming a path where there was none before. I push forward and leap higher until I catch him. The shadows coil around his neck like serpents, binding him tightly.
