The shadow doesn’t even notice. I slam a palm against the shadow over her head, snatching it away before it can hurt her. It’s like putty against my fingers—solid but fluid, colder than a piece of ice. My own shadows flare wildly at their brethren’s proximity, but I grit my teeth and ignore the sudden roiling movement of my marks. A guard puts his hand over her mouth, muffling her growls but it is too late. “Shit,” I growl. I quickly leap to my feet just as dozens of shadows from the trees on the mountain. I lift my hands and flames burst in a circle around all of us. The shadows stop at the edge of the circle, crouching down and watching the fire with fascination. “Draco! Draconem!” one says. I recognize the deep whispering voice and allow the flames to slowly fall. “Myrka?” I ask and all the shadows leap upwards.

She takes my hand in hers and squeezes it gently. "We are werewolves, not monsters," she says softly. "Our pack is called the Shadows and is led by Gabriel Valley. He became our leader after his father's death some months ago." I sigh and turn to look at her. Her blue eyes look sad as she stares at me. "I promise you my child, you are not a monster. Being different is your greatest power," she whispers, grazing her fingers across my eyebrows. "You'll see," she adds with a faint smile. I stare at her drowning in my thoughts. All that remained in his mind was hatred, but that was exactly the hatred that Adrian was ready to exploit. "Marissa!” he called out. "Ready!" Marissa responded from above and spread her wings wide. Golden arrows slowly emerged, timidly trying to chase away the shadows of the night. The great fire disc made its appearance. First, it emerged as a red line growing wider and wider until it rose victorious into the angelic blue sky, ready to stretch its arms over the whole earth. It tamed its color slightly, becoming comforting as it shyly soaked up the night frost with which you would think it was soothing its own color.

Her bodyguards swarmed me, a flurry of fists and boots coming at me from all sides. I fought back with all my might, but against those muscular men, I was overwhelmed and forced to the ground. I curled up, doing my best to shield myself. Nicole let out a piercing scream and threw herself over me, her small body trying to fend off the blows meant for me. I called out to her weakly, unable to push her away. Desperate, I managed to roll over, pulling Nicole underneath me to protect her. I barely cracked my eyes open, squinting at Simon a short distance away.

Willow applied pressure to her arm with a piece of paper while Roy gripped the steering wheel tight, his knuckles white. Sierra’s call came in halfway down the road, and she sounded panicky. “Roy, the candle we lit for Melanie in the church is flickering for no reason. I think it’s about to go out.
