On New Year's Eve, the city streets were strung with lights, and the distant pop and crackle of fireworks echoed from every direction. Audrey sat in that damp, dark basement apartment, bundled in a threadbare coat. There were no lights on. The only glow came from a candle on the coffee table, nearly burned down to nothing.
