My phone buzzed. Counsel. I answered immediately. “They came.” Counsel’s voice was calm and sharp. “Welfare check claim?” “Yes,” I said. “Two people. Badge. Clipboard. Denied entry.” “Good,” counsel said. “Do not feel guilty. You did exactly what you should. We’ll request the building cameras, and we’ll ask whether any official report exists. If it’s fake, it becomes intimidation. If it’s real, we address it through counsel.” My belly tightened again. “Noah heard the word ‘minor.’”

I ask for exceptions, for temporary release, for compassion. Every answer is the same. Denied. Not authorized. Out of jurisdiction. Above your clearance. Every door closes in my face with a polite smile. By the time Sarah steers me back outside, my hands are numb, my vision dim at the edges. “I’m sorry,” she murmurs, one arm wrapped tight around my shoulders. “Ellie, I’m so sorry.”

I wanted to scroll more but I heard commotion in front of the door so I shot down the folder and rushed to my chair. "Sorry for keeping you waiting, I just needed to check something with my superior." He said as he walked back in and slowly got behind his desk. "So, what is the matter? When can I get the permit?" I ask trying to appear as clueless as possible. "You can't, you have been denied." He talks very slowly as if he doesn't want to say the bad news to me. "Why, you gave me the permits before, nothing has changed. I need my cafe back. Its my only source of income." I try to stay as calm and professional as possible.

They whispered among themselves for a moment before the elder spoke again. “Due to your lack of romantic history, Nicholas and Kayla, your application has been denied.”

His voice shook because he was both sorry and determined. Ethan didn't move, and his hands were clenched at his sides. He had gone over his answer in his head a hundred times, but now that everyone was looking at him, he couldn't find the words. "I turned down my fated mate," Gabriel said next, looking away for a moment. "I said no to Ethan because I didn't think he was good enough for me. I was wrong, though. Every minute stretched endlessly while I sat beside my daughter’s bed holding her tiny hand, staring at the clock hanging on the hospital wall like somehow watching it closely would force time to slow down. The nanny stayed quietly in the corner while nurses moved in and out of the room occasionally checking the monitors. Hours later, the ward door opened again. I immediately stood up. “Did they approve it?” Dr. Hale walked in holding the same documents, but the look on his face made my stomach drop instantly. My smile faded slowly. “What happened?” The doctor hesitated before handing the papers back to me. The large red stamp across the front page almost blinded me. REQUEST DENIED.

“An internal warning?” I picked up Leo’s signed statement, still creased, still damp, and flicked it across the table. It struck Victor in the chest. “Vice President Shaw,” I said, “your people denied boarding, resold seats, and used company resources to run a private business. You signed off on it.” I met his eyes. “That’s your definition of a misunderstanding?” His face darkened instantly. He shot to his feet, pointing at me. “Vanessa Sterling, don’t push your luck. Being the chairman’s daughter doesn’t give you the right to make things up.”

A knock sounded against the office door. “Come in.” Noah entered carrying a folder. The moment he sat down, Damien asked, “What happened?” Noah raised an eyebrow. “With what?” “Aria.” The answer came so quickly that even Damien seemed to realize it afterward. Noah leaned back in his chair. “You could at least pretend you were asking about business.” Damien's expression darkened. “Report.” Noah opened the folder. “She’s been applying for jobs.” “And?” “Rejected.” “Why?”
