The books on the shelf were neatly arranged but the frayed edges and the little tears on the bottom of most of the books gave out that they’d been read a couple times. Adrian didn't particularly strike me as someone who would love to read but I guess you can't always judge a person by their outward appearance. I traced my fingers along the spines, the titles ranging widely from classic literature, to mindset guides then to business strategy books. One title in particular caught my eye and I pulled it out : Good to Great by Jim Collins. [Lila pov] I'm shoving books into my locker on Monday morning when Kai appears like he materialized out of thin air or something. He's got that post-weekend look—hoodie, messy hair, the kind of casual energy that makes it look like he just woke up five minutes ago and decided clothes were optional. "You got plans for lunch?" he asks. I turn around, holding a stack of textbooks against my chest. "Plans? Kai, it's Monday. My plans are to survive until Friday."

I collapsed in the street with my clothes in disarray. Vanessa Coleman looked at me with eyes full of aching concern and draped a jacket over me. "Don't talk about it," she comforted me. "Let's go home first." The eyes of neighbors and acquaintances cut into me like knives. I shuddered all over and finally believed that I really had been reborn. In my previous life, I had been kidnapped for no clear reason. Twenty-four hours later, I was dumped outside my own home.

It pulses once, like a heartbeat. I swallow hard. Strange things have always happened when I’m upset, lights flickering, books falling, dreams that feel too real, but this feels different. Like the pendant is reacting to something out there. Or calling to it. The fog thins as we turn onto a narrow road lined with lanterns shaped like pumpkins. They sway even though there’s no wind. “Hallow’s Edge goes all out for Halloween,” Ms. Carter says cheerfully. “Biggest festival in the county. You’ll be here just in time.”

Henna will be mad if she has to buy me new books already. This stupid shade over my head is doing less to nothing to protect me from the rain. It's started to get really cold now. The wind is blowing ghastly almost, it seems like it must be storming in some places. Glad it's not happening here. I wouldn't like the idea of getting washed away from the earth with the harsh wind as much as Gabriel would like that. I have to admit though, I really like storms, I don't know why but It gives me inner peace, makes me all giddy for some unknown reason.
