I asked, my business mind pushing the shock aside.
“Forty,” Leo said, looking at the floor.
“Forty hundred?” I asked, thinking four thousand was bad, but manageable.
“Thousand,” he corrected, his voice barely a whisper. “Forty thousand dollars. In cash. By tonight.”
The number was big, but not impossible. Not for me. A sharp anger replaced my fear. This was not about a debt. This was a shakedown. This was a man using Leo to get to me.
“It’s not a huge amount,” I said, my voice cool and calm. It was the voice I used in board meetings. “You should have told me instead of pushing me away.”
