“They’ve got killer milkshakes. Might bring the kid back to life.”
“Good call,” Conrad said, turning the car toward the diner. “You still a burger guy, Max?”
“Always,” I replied, grinning. “But only if the fries are worth it.”
We pulled into the diner’s lot, the neon sign humming above us. It was one of those old-school spots, all chrome and red vinyl booths, frozen in time since the ’80s. We grabbed a booth by the window, Caleb dragging himself behind us like he was being marched to detention. He slid into the seat across from us, hood still up, and buried his face in the menu.
