"Nice to meet you," Collen quickly took my hands and shook them. My hands fell limp to my side. "Is everything okay?" Hannah asked, her green eyes searching mine. "Yeah, just that um, I was about to go to bed when you came," I lied through my teeth. My heart was beating not just within my chest but I could hear it in head. This was the first time I had lied to my best friend in all our twelve years of being friends. "Oh, I was hoping you could stay up with us to watch a movie."

The line was so calm, so domestic, it felt like someone had reached in and swapped the soundtrack—passionate heat now replaced by playful sitcom air. “Friends?” I echoed, because I needed to hear the word aloud, to see where it landed on his face. He shrugged, like it was the most natural thing in the world to go from that to casual companionship. “Yeah. Friends.” I narrowed my eyes suspiciously. “You're unusually happy today.” He merely shrugged. “I finally got to see my favourite girl again after seven long fucking days. I'm ecstatic.” “Friend.” I corrected him playfully. Then his eyes hardened just a degree, dangerous again. “Friends who know which parts of you are mine.”

He told Nathaniel he didn’t know how to tell her, not with college just around the corner. Nathaniel had listened, nodded, tried to give advice even though he himself didn’t know what love was supposed to feel like. They talked for a while, and then Ethan left. But Nathaniel wasn’t free yet. That same evening, he was supposed to meet Nigel—Ryan’s older brother—who worked at the Whitmore company. Nigel was a great friend, and had promised to show him a new game after work. Nathaniel had been late because of Ethan, but he still rushed over, hoping Nigel might still be around.

When I got home, Tristan was in the kitchen cooking. He looked up when I walked in and smiled. “You’re back? How was the trip?” “It went well.” I changed my shoes, set my suitcase aside, and walked over to him, glancing into the pot. It was my favorite pork ribs. “What’s the occasion?” I asked with a smile. “I missed you.” He turned and kissed my forehead. The second his lips touched my skin, my stomach lurched. The same hands that had killed my best friend were cooking for me.

Then she took a large step back, like I was something contagious she didn't want near her. "You heard me, Cassandra. So I'll stop pretending. Please don't follow me around anymore. I don't want to be your friend. Someone like Wendy, with her background and her world, that's the kind of person I want in my life. "Look at yourself. You've got nothing, and you solve everything with your fists. You're not even someone I want to be seen with. Honestly? Being your friend has always been embarrassing." I stood there frozen after she finished.

The lake beyond the window was gray, and rain ran down the glass in thin lines. Sophia twisted her napkin. "I keep thinking about every time you cried over him and I told you to move on. I didn't know I was sleeping beside the answer." "You didn't know," I said. "I should have." Her voice broke. "You were my best friend. I should have asked more. Trying to get the words out of me with questions I can’t hide from. "Noah," I call his name with a warning edge to my voice, a silent request for him to drop it. But it’s Noah Addams—he never drops anything until he’s gotten to the bottom of it. He sets the plushie on his right thigh and leans forward with lifted brows. "Seriously, Brynn. Who’s he?" Knowing he won’t give it up, I sigh and look away from him. "He’s Asher’s best friend." "Asher’s best friend?" Noah repeats and I nod without meeting his eyes.

Rina came up and elbowed him in the ribs, making Ben grunt. "And if I wasn't already taken by the greatest girlfriend on the planet." He quickly back tracked making me laugh. We all knew he was kidding. "I love you too Ben." We shared a look that said enough for the both of us. Our friendship was something that I never expected but now would never give up. Ben was the brother I always wanted and I couldn't imagine my life without him being my best friend. I next moved to Harold's younger brother Dylan. He stood there proudly in his tux that really made him look handsome. Just like Harold, Dylan was handsome. While he may have that air of cockiness sometimes he was an absolute sweetheart.
