Walking up the stairs to my bedroom I still can’t wipe the smile off my face. It wasn’t until tonight that I realised that most – if not all – of my friendships are based around duty and necessity. Spending time with Invidia I see what a real friendship should be like; fun, relaxing and somewhere to turn when you’re at your lowest. Having a few drinks and dancing the night away was exactly what I needed to distract myself from everything going on in my life.

But the way the man before me is looking at me is trying to tell me otherwise. "I know all of Miss Addams' friends." He enlightens. Oh, that’s why. "And you’re not one of them. Since the beginning of our friendship, I’ve been in love with Natalie. Not some fleeting crush or quiet admiration—I mean the kind of love that settles deep into your bones. "What?" I wiped a tear from my eye. "Well..." I smiled warmly at him. "That works too." The children giggled. "But," I continued, "it's much better to start as friends." The boy tilted his head. "Why?" "Because friendship lets you discover who a person really is." I reached for Jason's hand, intertwining our fingers. "When Jason and I first met, we weren't thinking about marriage." I smiled at my husband. "We became partners because we first learned we could trust each other."

"I love you, mom." I could hear dad yelling in the background. "I love you, too, dad. Talk to you later." Clicking my phone off, I wandered back to my room upstairs to read a couple of chapters in my latest novel. It didn't seem very long after I got swept up in The Hobbit before my phone was ringing once again. It seems I'm just getting increasingly popular these days. "Hello?" I called out as I put my phone on speaker. A hushed voice whispers over the phone, "Ciprian?"

She was writing a novel, she had told me on our last call, which surprised me and also did not surprise me at all. The letters were mostly about ordinary things. What she was cooking. What she was reading. The boat Daniel was restoring. Occasionally they contained something real and open that she would not have said five years ago, before Portugal, before the choice she had made that had rearranged everything including, eventually, us. We were not what we had been. That friendship, the one that had been built in our twenties with its specific gravity and its particular patterns, that was finished. What we had now was smaller and more honest and I preferred it.

His response came in instantly, but I didn’t spare it a second glance as I threw the phone to the side and focused on my original. I could tell the truth right now…..I could say I’d never picked up her type of books even once in my life. But if I did, what are the chances that I’d lose a potential…friend? My heart still clammed against my ribcage, as sweat peaked across my brow. For some reason, the thought of lying to her left a bitter taste at the back of my tongue. However, the terror of losing a possible friend hurt more. Felix: Yes, I love novels as well. However, I focus more on art, even though that’s regarded as a weird hobby by many.

“I’m not ready to talk about it yet.” Anne nodded immediately. “That’s okay,” she replied softly. “Whenever you’re ready.” Joy gave her a grateful look, and the conversation shifted again to lighter topics. By the time they finished their coffee and began walking back to the apartment, the distance between them had disappeared completely. What had started as a simple roommate arrangement had quietly turned into a deeper friendship. When they got home, Anne went straight into the kitchen. “Sit down,” she said with a small smile. “I’ll make breakfast.”
