Wild Desire
All of us want the cheque that Matheson has promised.
The sunlight flashed on jade, emerald, scarlet, as tiny flies skittered around banana palms. Some of the bananas were ripe. Ruth cut some from the central stack. They were tiny and tasted creamy, not at all like supermarket fruit. She drank some water from the stream, then filled a canteen and slung the strap over one shoulder. Already it was growing dark. She hadn’t thought about the time when she left the village. Now she realised that she must spend the night alone in the jungle.
