It swings violently, and I steady it with trembling hands. Focus. I try again, this time with a combination of punches and kicks, but my coordination is off. My foot catches on the edge of the mat, and I stumble, nearly hitting the ground. “Damn it,” I mutter, catching myself just in time. The frustration bubbles up, and I punch the bag again, harder this time. It’s no use. I can’t shake the weight pressing down on me. Liam’s words, his accusations, they’re suffocating.

Lorenzo moved forward, hit the bag without much force, and the bag swung from left to right. My mouth went open in shock. No way he moved that bag with that low push.

Falling flat on my face, I let out an involuntary groan. As I tried to get back on my feet, I slipped on something slick and lost my balance. Instead of just falling again, I started tumbling down a hill. During the tumble, I lost my bag. I did my best not to make any noise, even as I rolled into a tree, keeping me from rolling further.

I fumbled with the strap of my bag, my palm damp with sweat. I forced my legs to move. But the words ‘you’re so fucked’ echoed, louder and louder, long after the door shut behind me.

Ten rings and there was no more answer. He returned to his seat analyzing Tessa’s teasing wordplay. Why was she so misleading in her statement? Her attitude was unlikely of a rejection, otherwise, she would have said so, for Tessa was frank and direct to the point. But he started it all with an ambiguous statement. He made a gambit that boomeranged, leaving him no other way but to swallow the game that he started.

It was a miracle that I didn't drop the bag again, as sharp pain throbbed through my worn fabric. “Sorry,” I muttered, still hurrying along. I had turned into the corridor that led to the kitchen, muttering a prayer of gratitude in my mind for making it back in time, so excited. I didn't see the dark silhouette standing a few steps in. Not until I bumped into a hard board. Something big and intimidating. My heart stopped as the bag slipped from my head and tumbled to the ground. The bottom seams split and the flour painted the walls and rose in the air. And I knew it was over.

Brick muttered as he dug inside his bag. “Don’t cuss,” I said without any heat as I plopped onto the bench next to him and got comfortable. He ignored me, wailing a panicked, “Nooo,” as he frantically searched his bag. “What?” I asked as he pulled up a crumpled Skittles bag that looked a lot thinner than it’d been when Mother had shoved it in there. “All my Skittles fell out of their bag, and fuck, there’s a hole in the bottom of my backpack.”
