There was no point in doing anything, or saying anything, or trying to. Something trilled. An electric warble. A cell phone. An old school cell, by the sound. One of those early low-tech jobs, on which you could only call, text, and maybe play basic games. And sure, yeah—a junk shop these days probably would have a box of old cell phones, or Tracphones or whatever. It trilled again.

“Fun. Another concept I do not understand. Explain.” Mara sat down like this was normal. Like talking to reality glitches was something she did every day. “Fun is when doing something makes you happy. Like when I figure out a hard word. Or when my mom lets me stay up late. Or when the silver flowers sing.” “Happiness is chemical reaction in organic brains. Why pursue chemical reactions?” “Because they feel good.” “Feeling good serves what purpose?” Mara shrugged. “It’s just nice. Not everything needs a purpose.”

That was a fact I kept encountering and kept finding inconvenient. "What are you doing," I said. My voice came out steady, which was impressive because nothing else about me was.
