I whimper as I shut my eyes, trying to take my head far before he stops me by placing his free hand under my chin. The pain of his touch electrifies my whole cells. I imagine death, the ruthless phantom that feeds on lives, especially innocent ones. Layla stood unmoving as Scarlet ratted out mean things about her. She could do nothing but sob quietly. There was nothing she could do now, her secret was out. Are you really into it?" She thought, 'He was so nice to me last night, but this morning he's not. If he likes his book so much, he can spend time with it instead.'

The air suddenly turned freezing. A heavy feeling pressed down on everything, like a storm rolling in. Elena’s skin prickled all over. She didn’t have to look to know who was there. Xander stood in the doorway. He didn’t move, but anger poured off him in waves. His eyes were bright gold—wolf eyes, the kind that meant he was barely holding it together. He stared at Garrett’s hand on the ice pack, at how close they were sitting, heads bent together. A growl rumbled out of him. Low. Scary. The windows shook a little.

"What do you mean, Xander? I haven't been unfaithful to you." He leaned forward, his voice dripping with disdain. "Oh, Bella, do you think I'm blind? I've seen the messages, the secret rendezvous, the men you've been meeting behind my back. Don't pretend you're innocent in all of this." Confusion turned to anger, fueling my own voice. "I haven't done anything, Xander! I've been nothing but loyal to you, despite the challenges we've faced." His laughter was devoid of any warmth. "Loyal? Tell me, Bella, what about the man you met at the charity gala? The secret coffee dates with a stranger? Or the clandestine phone calls in the dead of night?"
