By nightfall, they reached the edge of the gorge. The wind howled like a wounded thing, tearing at their cloaks. In the distance, through a haze of frost and shadow, they saw it and the next gate.
It towered in the center of a vast, frozen lake, encased in translucent ice. Unlike the previous one, this gate burned faintly with blue fire beneath the surface, as if trapped between realms. The runes around it pulsed in slow, uneven rhythms and alive, but unstable.
