An hour later, I pulled up to their house, and she walked out of the front door before I could even get out of my Jeep. She climbed inside and Uncle James stood by the front door. He showed me with his hands that he would be watching me, and I laughed. Kari seemed downright sad as I drove away, and I glanced over at her.
“What’s going on with you?” I asked her. She’d been fine an hour earlier.
“You probably haven’t heard yet. George rolled his car the night before last, and he died,” she said.
