Ryle was a good guy from the start so she was hopeful that Ryle is not like Lily’s father. Lily’s father was physically and verbally abusive.

his voice dropped to a raw whisper. My heart slammed. Liar. But... his eyes. They didn’t look like a liar’s. “You’re lying,” I whispered. Weak. Terrified. Making a sound of agreement, Knight stood and stretched his arms above his head, groaning as his back cracked. “I wonder if they’ve uncovered anything new themselves. Didn’t they say they had Kalix investigating?” “The Whisperer,” Ghost hummed. Kalix, aka the Whisperer, was a wolf with the uncanny ability to project himself to anyone he locked eyes with. It didn’t matter how well protected the person was. One glance and he’d be able to visit them.

The shadows in the corners seemed to stretch, the light of the moon dimming ever so slightly. And then, just as I was about to speak, a faint whisper sounded through the room. "Elara…" Her head jerked up, and her eyes widened in terror. "Do you hear that?" she whispered. I nodded. My heart started beating faster. It wasn't a human voice. It wasn't natural. The trail weaves through ice-crusted brush, across half-frozen mud, into a pocket of rock and moss so cloaked in magic even my senses hesitate. Old wards. I slip through the veil of scent and spell and shadow and there he is. Collapsed in a splintered ruin of a cabin, curled beneath a torn coat, ribs rising too fast and shallow. Eli. His skin is pale where it’s not flushed with fever. One arm flung out beside him, fingers twitching like he’s still running in his dreams.
