I rise again, forcing myself to my feet, trying one last time, testing my luck, testing my charm. I step toward the nearest guard, flash the practiced smile, tilt my head, let my voice drip with playfulness. “Surely there is some way to let me out, just for a moment,” I whisper, leaning closer, brushing his arm again, hoping that instinctive, human desire to please, to obey, to avoid conflict, might sway him.
