I sank to the floor, my back against the wall, hands shaking. I closed my eyes, praying, whispering fragments of prayers I hadn’t spoken in years. God, keep me alive. God, keep him alive. Keep me sane, just for a moment. Just long enough.
When I opened my eyes, I saw Robert entering the room, his steps measured, his face hard but pale. He glanced at me, his voice low and bitter. “You will fix this mess,” he said, every word dripping with anger and disappointment. “You will endure him. You will survive.”
