Their hugs were tighter than usual, filled with a desperate kind of love that made it harder to let go.
“Take care,” Joey and Noe murmured together, their voices trembling. I glanced at them, noticing the faint shimmer in their eyes, their tears threatening to spill but stubbornly held back.
“I will,” I said, my voice breaking slightly. I reached out, gently cupping their faces in my hands, tracing the faint worry lines on their brows with my thumbs. “You’ll be fine,” I whispered, as much to them as to myself.
With effort, I stepped back, the warmth of their embrace lingering like a ghost on my skin. “Goodbye,” I said, the word feeling too final, too heavy.
