His footsteps faded down the hallway, followed by the heavy click of the front door closing. Arthur stayed on his knees by the sofa, his head bowed slightly. The silence between them grew long and heavy, filled only with the distant hum of the refrigerator from the kitchen. He didn't ask her again. He just reached out, his large hand covering her smaller one, holding on tightly as the afternoon light began to change, casting long, dark shadows across the books on the shelves.

Saying it out loud wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be, yet I had been trapped by this truth for so many years. "That's not true. It's not that I don't love you..." His eyes fell on my right hand, as if he had found a glimmer of hope. He lifted my hand, his expression filled with expectation. “You’re still wearing this ring, which means you still love me.” On my right ring finger was a plain band, its color faded and worn, looking quite cheap. It was because of this that during my three years wandering the streets, no one ever tried to steal it.

Lucas watched them, a shell of himself, as I laid the divorce papers before him again. "Sign these soon, then we'll pick a date to make it official." His voice shook. "This is our home. Where will you go? I can't bear to lose you, I was wrong, I ignored you..." His words washed over me, leaving no mark as I wheeled my suitcase out the door. "Harriet, I love you. I can't stand to be apart from you..." Lucas was a mess, tears choking his words. The lead mover shot us a sympathetic look before hurrying off to his truck.

I merely smirked and said, "We can talk about it when you're out!" … I wasn't in a hurry to leave this place after returning home. Instead, I used the savings I had to make a few clothing sales. After I managed to set aside enough money, I packed up and left with Natalie. Before leaving, I bought some gifts for the older women in the village whom I was close to. After all, they had been kind to me and Natalie after Joshua and the others were taken away. Even after we left, I kept in touch with them through letters.

"Stay here with Amanda, Ms. Sanders. I'll take care of the fees." Tears welled up in Charlotte's eyes as she stared at Jonathan gratefully. He patted her shoulder soothingly but shot me a dark look. "Tessa, if you apologize to Ms. Sanders and Amanda now, we can move past this." His words stabbed through me like a dagger. The burning sensation on my calf was nothing compared to my heartbreak at that moment. I stared at the man I had loved for the last six years. A bitter smile etched upon my bloodless face as I relented. "Fine. I'm sorry."
