I paused at the Harry Potter series, but while the girls were old enough, being werewolves, for the story, I knew the sizes of the books would put them off. Next year, I thought. They’d have handled textbooks by then and wouldn’t be so rapidly opposed to books an inch thick or more.

“Hey… about what you saw earlier.” She jumped, clutching the book to her chest. “I—I didn’t see anything. I swear. I won’t tell anyone.” I smiled softly and stepped even closer, backing her gently against the shelves. “Relax. Professor Harlan and I… we have an understanding. But I saw how you looked at us. But here I was, down in the basement stacks at almost eleven, surrounded by dusty shelves and dim overhead lights. Mr. Kane had come down to help me find one last obscure history text. We were deep in the back when everything went black. The lights cut out with a loud pop. The air conditioning hummed to a stop. Total silence. “Shit,” I muttered, gripping the book in my hands tighter. “Power outage?” Mr. Kane’s voice came from a few feet away, calm as always. “Looks like it. The whole building probably. Stay still for a second. Don’t trip over the carts.”

And then— A child’s laughter echoed from inside. Small. Sweet. But ice-cold. Aarav’s blood turned to stone. “Who’s there?” he asked. No answer. Just that laughter again. And then— From the darkness behind the door, two faintly glowing eyes appeared. At the height of a child. But they weren’t human. Completely still. Completely cold. Like a painted image. Then— It stepped out. Aarav raised his flashlight. And what he saw became the greatest terror of his life.
