The gold dims, flickering like a candle flame in wind. Slowly, painfully, the claws retract. The shoulders settle. The beast recedes, leaving a man standing in its place—naked from the waist up, his skin laced with fresh cuts from the glass, his chest heaving.

"Take your hands off her!" Mason shouted at the top of his lungs, stepping straight around the front bumper of his truck into the freezing downpour. "Leave her alone, man! What the hell is wrong with you?!" Mason reached out with both hands, grabbing for Leo’s wet shoulder to yank him back from my open passenger doorway. Leo turned like a lethal weapon. Before Mason’s fingers could even lock onto his hoodie, Leo spun around with lightning speed, grabbing Mason’s wrist in mid-air. With one swift, ruthless movement, Leo twisted Mason's arm back hard enough to make the star athlete bend at the waist and grunt out in sharp, sudden pain.

“Brian, name your price for an hour with her after your boy marks her. I’ll make her scream pretty for you.” Brian didn’t even glance at me. “She’s Ben’s tonight. But if he gets bored before dawn, I might auction the leftovers.” The beta laughed and reached out to brush my cheek. I jerked my head away. The chain rattled. “Feisty,” he said. “I like when they fight a little.” Ben’s voice cut across the clearing, lazy and loud. “Touch her again and I’ll take your hand, Marcus. She’s not for sampling.” The beta backed off with a smirk. “Pity. Alpha blood always tastes sweetest when it’s still got some fight left.”
