He offered and handed his pill to me, bringing a bright smile to my face. "Thanks bro." I thanked him, and he winked, rushing out. That was how he saved me, but I knew it was only a matter of time before my secret would be exposed. This was a dangerous path to tread—the type that would bring disaster and death at the end. It was that type of romance that has no happy ending. I knew this, and I should stay away. The best option was to kill her and save myself from falling harder, but my powers are weak in front of her.

Long enough for me to remember who I was before I met him. Turns out, I actually like romance novels. Not the tasteful literary romances Kenneth approved of. I’m talking absolutely shameless books with shirtless men on the covers, morally questionable billionaires, ridiculous amounts of tension, and enough spice to qualify as attempted arson. The kind Kenneth used to wrinkle his nose at. “Those books rot your brain, Jo.” Funny. I don’t think the books were the problem. I’ve also rediscovered cheesy rom-coms and psychological thrillers, all the goodies that Kenneth never agreed to watch with me because they were “too stupid” (the romcoms) and “too complicated” (the psych thrillers).

“Kelvin is mobilizing everything he has.” Her heart jumped. “You’re monitoring him.” “I’d be stupid not to,” Dante replied. “He’s dangerous when cornered.” “Don’t talk about him like that,” Ruby snapped. Dante’s jaw tightened. “You still love him.” “Yes,” she said without hesitation. “I do.” The word seemed to cut him deeper than shouting ever could. “Then you should listen carefully,” Dante said. “Because what happens next will decide whether he lives.” The room tilted.

Edward handled most of them while I restocked shelves and learned the layout. Around two, a woman came in looking for a specific dark romance. "Do you have anything like Butcher & Blackbird?" she asked. "I just finished it and I need something similar." Edward looked at me. "Maliya?" I stepped forward. "Have you read Haunting Adeline? Or the Broken Bride series? They've got similar dark romance vibes with morally gray love interests." Her face lit up. "I haven't read either of those. Where are they?" I led her to the romance section, pulled both books, gave her quick summaries.

He’d chosen every lamp, the perfect cushion, every soft blanket folded at the corner of the reading chaise. My throat tightened. I didn’t cry, but the tears felt dangerously close. I walked deeper, and the rug under my feet was thick and soft. Everything in here was gentle, thoughtful, and safe. “I can’t believe he did this.” I whispered, barely breathing as I sunk into the chair and felt it comfortably welcome me. I stood back up to pick up a book in the dark romance genre. I felt loved even more and seen. Completely. “What are you going to do now?” Brittney asked, and I smiled at her as she grabbed one of the psychological thrillers.

“You seriously don’t understand why I’m nervous?” Sebastian’s expression softened slightly. “I understand perfectly.” Before I could respond, he reached for my hand gently. “Come have dinner with me.” My breath caught instantly. “A date?” A slow smile appeared on his lips. “Yes, princess. A date.” Against all logic… I said yes. A few hours later we sat inside one of London’s most luxurious restaurants hidden inside a private section away from the public. The atmosphere felt romantic. Soft lighting. Wine. Quiet music. And Sebastian looking devastatingly handsome across the table from me.

He wasn't interested in other people's lives; as long as he and Paige could live happily, that was enough for him. "Ah..." Paige sighed softly, "I was hoping Tina and Niel would divorce. Then Tina could start a new life and build her career. She’ll then meet a handsome and wealthy man, marry him, and live happily ever after. Meanwhile, Niel would realize he had always loved Tina after the divorce and try to win her back, only to be harshly rejected by her." Chris felt strangely familiar with the plot. Wasn't it similar to the recently popular "romantic redemption" genre?

"Whatever happened to love each other first then... then doing the deed after. Is everyone after physical contact only these days? What about getting to know each other first? Chivalry? Romantic date?" I sighed and stopped spinning, facing my laptop and visiting a bookstore's site to see what books sell. Ah, of course, my book wouldn't be in the top 10, and I didn't hope so; what's staring back at me is the top 10 best-selling books for the week, where five of ten are Erotic Romance books. "And I thought my company wouldn't be like other companies who are after profit; I was wrong. Then again, business is business."
