With each step, the air seemed to grow warmer, the crisp snow sagging, icicles losing their grasp on branches and falling to the ground. Why would anyone leave the door open? She thought. Reaching the end of the snow line, where the patchy slush trailed off, her heels dug into the mud. Celina gawked at the sight in front of her. Its a cave. Sheer walls of metamorphic rock cut down deep onto the earth, the mouth too wide for a person, hell a giant creature to easily walk in. Thick tree roots dangled over the edge, on either side hiding the cave.

Instead, right below the rocky outcrop we stand on, is a massive ravine, gorged into the mountain leading all the way out to the horizon. Grabbing a hold of Cian’s arm tightly, I push away from the edge of the cliff, wary of the slipping rocks that scatter down into the jagged bottom of the ravine. "I haven't seen my brother in many years, but it's not easy to predict how he is going to react,” Cian exclaims as I awkwardly let go of him. He gestures for me to follow him into the mouth of what appears to be a man made cave. Cloudy lanterns are etched into the walls, lighting the stony path we walk down. I hate to know what entices someone, especially an immortal to choose here to live.

A loud rumbly sound filled the air as the secret rock door slid open, revealing a wide, dark tunnel entrance leading straight into the heart of the mountain.

"The frequency is pulling to the right. It’s loud now. It’s making my teeth ache." They turned a sharp corner where the black shale gave way to a dense, grey granite. The moment they stepped past the rock face, the darkness vanished, replaced by a sight that made the entire squad freeze in their tracks. They had reached the edge of a massive, subterranean cavern so vast it could have easily housed the entire Silver Ridge pack house. The chamber was illuminated not by natural light, but by a horrific green fire that erupted from natural fissures in the stone floor. The emerald flames cast a sickly, dancing glow across the ancient stalactites, making the shadows on the walls look like writhing

The heart of the cavern was dominated by a monolith of obsidian-black stone, wrapped in bands of shifting, liquid gold light. It looked like a finger of the earth had pierced through the crust, scarred with the same archaic script that now throbbed beneath Rangga’s own skin. But the sacred silence of the chamber had been violated. Massive, portable drilling rigs—industrial-grade hydraulic beasts—were already anchored into the floor, their diamond-tipped bits pressed against the base of the monolith.

"Mira told me this was a significant community." "They are here," Granite said. "You simply cannot perceive them yet. Your time sense is too narrow." Granite led her to a dwelling carved deep into the mountainside. Inside, the temperature was constant, the air still, the silence so complete that Selene could hear her own heartbeat. She and Greyson climb up together after they lower the rope back down, giving Greyson something to hold on to. Once they’re all up, Celine pulls in the rope and coils it near the tie-off point at the top. They enter the cave; it’s a large open space with an almost domed roof. There’s a pool of water off to one side, which seems to go down into a small underwater space. It’s fresh water, but probably not safe to drink as there’s a lot of murk in the water. There are a couple of tunnels that lead to other exits, but they aren’t as safe to use as the one they’d come in through.
