Now I need to pass the most complicated way to get there. The kingdom of sandcastle is named after its sand reputation. The kingdom was built strongly on the sand, and even though it had a reputation for being strong, its biggest natural disaster was “quicksand”. The people of the kingdom had suffered for so long before they were finally able to make the land habitable. Rumors have it that the forerunners of the kingdom had to make a sacrifice to the sand god to appease him to stop taking the lives of its people.

My priority was to keep Audrey safe and get to the bunker as soon as I can. With one hand keeping the wet blanket in place to cover my baby sister, I managed to reach the stairs that leads down to the bunker. As I reached the end of the stairs, I ran another set of hallways before reaching the kitchen. Once I was there, I saw the familiar human-sized painting that hides the door to the safe bunker. I was starting to feel relieved.

Everything about the day was ordinary, beautifully, deceptively ordinary. Cassian and Celeste squealed as the tide tickled their ankles, running up the shore with buckets in hand. They were halfway through building a lopsided sandcastle kingdom, Celeste’s fortress had seashell guards, while Cassian had engineered a working moat with filtered water channels. Arla-Rosa watched them from her spot beneath a pale linen parasol, legs folded, a book resting unread in her lap.

“That's a bummer, huh?” They spent the next hour or so building the sandcastle, and by the time they were done, it looked like the Taj Mahal. It was at least as big as a dog house, with two stories and intricate windows engraved in the walls by Ethan. “I need a picture of this,” Laura said, pulling out her phone. “Wait, hold on,” Ethan said, hopping up from the sand. “I'll take the picture with you and the kids next to the castle. It'll be a family picture for you.”

I said and Smile smiled brightly. Well. At least I wasn’t alone on this journey. I squatted near their tiny sand castle and tried making a big enough sand castle for them. Smile and Lead entered my sand castle, but it crumbled, burying them within it. “Oh, no!” I removed the sand and dug them out. Both of them shook their bodies, dusting off sand off them and their wings. I used my fingers to clean them off. I chuckled. Why are they so cute? “Zeve!” I heard Lily shout in her tiny voice. I immediately got to my feet, sensing the danger in her tone.

Camille giggled as she added seashells and other beach treasures to their masterpiece. But in a moment of distraction, Devon accidentally stepped on the castle, ruining its intricate design. Camille's face fell, but Devon quickly apologized, "Oh no, sweetie! I'm so sorry!" Camille couldn't help but laugh, "It's okay, Dad. We can build another one!" Annabelle chuckled, "Or maybe we can make it even better!" Together, they rebuilt and improved their sandcastle, creating memories that would last a lifetime. As the sun began to set, they packed up their belongings and headed home, tired but happy from their beach adventure. "Best day ever!" Camille exclaimed, snuggling up to Devon and Annabelle.

Erlan held my hand as we walked along the sand. “Do you like playing in the sand?” Erlan asked while looking at me. I chuckled. “It's been a long time since I played in the sand. Maybe this is the right time.” Erlan laughed and suddenly dumped sand at my feet. "Let's begin!" We started playing in the sand, building small sand castles, and throwing sand at each other happily. A moment later, Erlan jumped up and started running towards the sea. “Come on, come after me, Kate!”

"You know I won't take no for an answer because you already promised me you would join me in making a sand castle." "Can't I take back what I said?" I teased. "No, you can't," he said, giving me a warning look. I burst out laughing. I stood up abruptly. "Race me," I said. Immediately, I ran towards the beach, and he followed behind me. When we got to a place that was less crowded with people and a place where the waves didn't reach, we knelt on the sand and began to create our sand castle. Every castle I created kept collapsing after getting to a particular level. But his never collapsed. "How do you do that?" I asked, my tone laced with a little bit of envy.

TWO MONTHS LATER— BAYVIEW BEACH “You’re terrible at building sandcastles.” Camilia laughed as she watched Rohan’s architectural attempt collapse for the third time, his business-suit-trained hands struggling with the engineering principles of wet sand and gravity. The afternoon sun caught the highlights in her hair as she knelt beside him on the beach, her sundress tucked carefully around her legs. “I’m better at building actual structures that don’t fall down when the tide comes in,” he replied, brushing sand from his palms.

After bathing Harley and dressing him in clean pajamas, Cynthia listened as he rubbed his eyes and excitedly recounted their day—how he and Lucien had played at the beach, built a huge sandcastle together.
