Everything about the day was ordinary, beautifully, deceptively ordinary. Cassian and Celeste squealed as the tide tickled their ankles, running up the shore with buckets in hand. They were halfway through building a lopsided sandcastle kingdom, Celeste’s fortress had seashell guards, while Cassian had engineered a working moat with filtered water channels. Arla-Rosa watched them from her spot beneath a pale linen parasol, legs folded, a book resting unread in her lap.

“That's a bummer, huh?” They spent the next hour or so building the sandcastle, and by the time they were done, it looked like the Taj Mahal. It was at least as big as a dog house, with two stories and intricate windows engraved in the walls by Ethan. “I need a picture of this,” Laura said, pulling out her phone. “Wait, hold on,” Ethan said, hopping up from the sand. “I'll take the picture with you and the kids next to the castle. It'll be a family picture for you.”

I said and Smile smiled brightly. Well. At least I wasn’t alone on this journey. I squatted near their tiny sand castle and tried making a big enough sand castle for them. Smile and Lead entered my sand castle, but it crumbled, burying them within it. “Oh, no!” I removed the sand and dug them out. Both of them shook their bodies, dusting off sand off them and their wings. I used my fingers to clean them off. I chuckled. Why are they so cute? “Zeve!” I heard Lily shout in her tiny voice. I immediately got to my feet, sensing the danger in her tone.

She lay on her back, her yellow dress now dry, spread out around her like flower petals. “Let’s build a sandcastle,” she said suddenly, turning to me with a grin. “A sandcastle?” I raised an eyebrow. “Aren’t we too old for that?” “Never too old,” she said, sitting up and digging her hands into the sand. “Come on, Travis.” I laughed and joined her. For the next twenty minutes, we built a crooked, lopsided sandcastle together. She added tiny shells for windows and used a stick to draw little flags.

TWO MONTHS LATER— BAYVIEW BEACH “You’re terrible at building sandcastles.” Camilia laughed as she watched Rohan’s architectural attempt collapse for the third time, his business-suit-trained hands struggling with the engineering principles of wet sand and gravity. The afternoon sun caught the highlights in her hair as she knelt beside him on the beach, her sundress tucked carefully around her legs. “I’m better at building actual structures that don’t fall down when the tide comes in,” he replied, brushing sand from his palms.

She buried her head into her hands and sobbed. “Mummy can you give auntie a hug?” Sean asked his mother. “She is very sad.” Natasha turned to look at Luyando’s desperate state. “Sean, why don’t you and I go out and take a look at the beautiful orchard behind the house?” Tulani took his son’s hand and led him out of the room. “What is an orchard dad?” Sean asked. “It is a garden of fruits son.” “Woooow. Are there apples there?” the four year old asked excitedly.

Long enough for the pile of shells to grow beyond what could reasonably be described as a collection and into something that communicated either genuine interest or a very pleasant way of spending an afternoon that was not thinking about lighthouses. Camille's face fell, but Devon quickly apologized, "Oh no, sweetie! I'm so sorry!" Camille couldn't help but laugh, "It's okay, Dad. We can build another one!" Annabelle chuckled, "Or maybe we can make it even better!" Together, they rebuilt and improved their sandcastle, creating memories that would last a lifetime. As the sun began to set, they packed up their belongings and headed home, tired but happy from their beach adventure. "Best day ever!" Camille exclaimed, snuggling up to Devon and Annabelle.

Erlan held my hand as we walked along the sand. “Do you like playing in the sand?” Erlan asked while looking at me. I chuckled. “It's been a long time since I played in the sand. Maybe this is the right time.” Erlan laughed and suddenly dumped sand at my feet. "Let's begin!" We started playing in the sand, building small sand castles, and throwing sand at each other happily.
